Acupuncture

This is one of the main tools used in Chinese medicine which uses fine, sterile, single-use needles that are inserted into the skin and muscles in various parts of the body. Points of insertion are chosen based on each person’s condition. Acupuncture creates a regulatory effect on the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems. Acupuncture also improves the circulation of qi and blood there by helping to bring the needed healing elements to damaged or inflamed tissues and to remove waste from these areas. This relaxing treatment may include cupping, tui na, gua sha, moxa, tuning forks, and dietary/lifestyle recommendations, all of which are described below.

Electro-Acupuncture

Electro-acupuncture is performed with the use of a specialized machine that creates continuous or pulsating stimulation to acupuncture points on the body. Acupuncture needles are connected to the machine via alligator clips and an electrical current travels through this connection. No current is actually transmitted through the patient. There is just enough current to stimulate the needles. It is considered to be especially useful for conditions of chronic pain, muscle spasms, weakness, atrophy, and in conditions where qi is difficult to stimulate.

Cupping

This treatment method uses special cups that are suctioned to the skin and left in place or moved around to create a massage-like sensation. This increases blood and lymphatic flow which can help relieve muscle tension, improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and remove waste and toxins more efficiently from the body.

Recommended for the treatment of pain, gastrointestinal disorders, lung diseases (especially chronic cough and asthma), paralysis, and gynecological disorders.

Gua Sha

Gua sha treatment

Gua Sha refers to the use of a smooth-edged tool, like a polished stone or bone, to scrape along the skin to break up stagnation by improving circulation. Similar in action to cupping but can be used on a variety of body areas that may not be possible to cup, such as the smaller aspects of the arms and legs.

Moxibustion

Moxibustion is a technique used in traditional Chinese medicine where dried, smouldering mugwort is placed in close proximity with the body to promoting healing by warm skin and needles. The warming quality of this treatment increases the circulation of blood and qi which helps to dispel stagnation-induced pain. It is helpful in treating such ailments as arthritis, digestive issues, menstrual cramps and is widely recognized for its influence in turning breech babies.

Yang Shang Fa (Diet and Lifestyle Advice)

Yang Shang Fa is translated as health preservation through nurturing the body, mind, and spirit in harmony with the natural and universal laws. Ancient texts refer to how one should conduct one’s daily rhythms in alignment with the seasons and about developing awareness of our emotional states to create balance within them.

Acutonics

Tuning fork in sound therapy

Acutonics is the use of tuning forks placed on various acupuncture points and meridians to create healing through different vibrational frequencies. The body is made up largely of water which makes it a perfect resonator for sound vibration.
